It was just a matter of time before "High School Musical," the TV musical that's spawned an entire franchise, including real live stage shows, backpacks, an upcoming sequel and all type of merchandising; would also get its own videogame. Disney Interactive Studios will release three new games featuring music and characters from the hit TV movie this August. For Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 2 comes a karaoke game that will feature songs from both movies and the ability for two players to sing duets to Disney Channel artists' songs. For Nintendo DS, an adventure-style game, which features plenty of dancing, will allow players to assume the identity of one of the six characters from the films or create their own and compete in a virtual musical competition.
For those who don't have tweens, Disney Channel's "High School Musical" sold 2.7 million DVDs, making it the fastest-selling TV movie of all time. There are over 100 million unique viewers worldwide who have watched the show. The soundtrack for the film is the best-selling children's CD of all time. As you can see, there's quite an audience out there for this franchise.
It makes sense for Disney to capitalize on this show's success, as well as the growing success of karaoke gaming. Konami's "Karaoke Revolution Presents American Idol" was a recent example on PS2 of a game company blending a hit TV show with a solid karaoke game. While that game skews older, there's a huge tween audience out there that will likely gobble up these new "High School Musical" games.
