It's a "World of Warcraft" and we just live here. With over 8 million subscribers worldwide playing the massively multiplayer online game from Blizzard Entertainment. The recently released and highly anticipated first expansion pack for the game, "The Burning Crusade," has broken all sales records to become the fastest-selling PC game in its first 24 hours in North America and Europe. The game sold 2.4 million copies in these territories in its first day. Blizzard shipped over 4 million copies of the game to 5,000 retailers around the globe. Those remaining copies are being bought up as soon as they hit retail shelves.
According to Blizzard, 1.2 million copies sold in North America and another 1.1 million copies sold in Europe in the first 24 hours. By the time the day was over, over 1.7 million people had logged in online to play the new expansion pack. According to Gamestop, more gamers pre-ordered this title online than any game in its history, which makes sense, since the game has an active online community of gamers who gather in this fantasy world to play together.
In related news, the "South Park" episode featuring "World of Warcraft," which was done with the help of developer Blizzard, has been the number one downloaded TV show on Microsoft's new Xbox 360 Video Marketplace. More gamers have purchased and downloaded that episode than any other TV show on the service--and there are hundreds to choose from. Hollywood's taken notice of this phenomenon and a movie based on the game is in early development.
