Play Wii and Lose Weight

Everyone knows that playing Konami's "Dance Dance Revolution" game at the arcade or at home with the dance mat is a sure way to burn calories. There's even a built-in calorie counter in the game. But now it looks like Wii is having the same impact on gamers. Players who spend 30 minutes or more a day playing Wii Sports have reported losing as much as nine pounds over six weeks.

Before you run out and by one--that is if you can even find one of these consoles--keep in mind that you have to actually play the games whole-hearted. That means for the Wii Tennis game, you have to swing the remote like you would a real tennis racket. With Wii Baseball, the remote has to be swung like a bat. The game allows you to get away with slight motions, but to actually get the full workout, players have to put it all into these games.

Even without going into these games looking to lose some fat, Wii has managed to get couch potatoes standing up and interacting with their TVs. That's quite an accomplishment. And while the "DDR" games were limited to dancing, every Wii game incorporated some type of exercise-like movement into gameplay. With over 30 games (and counting), that should get a lot more people out of their seats and moving to their games. And the games are so fun that you won't even realize you're getting exercise.

With many schools already using "DDR" games and dance pads to get kids to exercise (including the entire state of West Virginia), I don't think it will be long before health clubs and schools start stocking Wiis to encourage kids to get active. It might take a while, only because Nintendo sells every Wii that hits store shelves immediately. But supplies will catch up to demand by this summer, and there will be even more great games by then.
