I was watching "American Idol" last night and I can't get over how great a judge Katy Perry was. She seemed to actually take the job seriously, unlike Avril Lavigne, who just sat there giggling with that stupid hoodie on her head.
Katy wasn't afraid to tell Kara that she made no sense. Finally! I have been dying for someone to do that!
Sometimes, Kara seems to be talking just to hear herself talk. I think the contestants need an actual judge, not someone who is trying to make a name for themselves by coming up with snappy things to say. (Though Katy had the comment of the night when she threatened to pour her Coke on Kara.)
Back to Katy though - She held her own on the panel and gave constructive criticism to the contestants.
So what did you think of Katy and Avril?
And what about the contestants? So far, I am rooting for John Park, Christopher “Chris” Golightly and Tyler Graddy.
The stars of the new movie "Dear John" will visit military personnel and their families on Saturday at Fort Bragg. They will also walk the red carpet for a special premiere of their new movie.
“Dear John” is a romantic drama based on one of Nicholas Sparks' books. It stars Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried.
A group of Cary business partners are once again competing for top honors in the Doritos Super Bowl XLIV commercial contest.
The group has two commercials in the top six. Each team in the top six wins $25,000 and a trip to the Super Bowl.
Their entry: Underdog

In the past, Charlie Sheen's career has been eclipsed by wild partying and drug and alcohol abuse. He has been to rehab twice.
In recent years though – thanks to the successful sitcom "Two and Half Men" – he has appeared to put all of the negative press behind him.
Sheen even survived a messy divorce and custody battle with ex-Denise "It's Complicated" Richards, who accused him of threatening her and her daughters' safety, according to published reports.
But Sheen's arrest on Christmas Day for alleged spousal abuse may be something he may never overcome.
Sheen was arrested on suspicion of menacing, second-degree assault and criminal mischief.
Sheen's wife Brooke Mueller Sheen told Aspen police that her husband pinned her on a bed, put a knife to her throat and threatened to kill her after she said she wanted a divorce, according to an arrest warrant affidavit released Monday.
I've often wondered, what does Steven Seagal do in his spare time? Now I have an answer. He is a police officer in my home state of Louisiana.
Seagal has been serving as a deputy with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Department for the past 10 years. His adventures are documented on the new A&E show "Steven Seagal: Lawman."
It is entertaining to watch the show and look for landmarks I recognize and hope they arrest someone I may know.
It is interesting to see people respond to Seagal. Sometimes suspects request an autograph or want to shake his hand. Pretty surreal.
After watching his skills, I would feel safe with Seagal patrolling my streets.
Have you ever had your ears candled? Well Jessica Simpson has and she posted the video to prove it.
She posted this on her Twitter page. What do you think, too much information?
Ear candling is supposed to remove the ear wax from deep inside your ear, but there is no medical proof that it even works. It is also very dangerous. People can be burned by hot wax or catch their hair on fire. At least Jessica's hairdresser, Ken Paves, was there filming the video. He could do an emergency hair repair.
After watching this season of "Survivor," I can honestly say that the jury got it right last night when they picked Natalie White as the winner of the $1 million prize.
Some argued that millionaire Russell Hantz played the game much better. He did find immunity idols with no clues and masterminded a lot of the eliminations. But what Russell forgot was the key to winning to the show is getting enough jury votes at the end.
Russell bullied everyone, controlled the game and will go down as one of the most hated players in the history of the show. But he neglected to think about the jury – a group of people he lied to and manipulated to get to the end.
Natalie had the best strategy. She flew under the radar by aligning herself with the biggest bully in the game. She saw early on that strong women were the first to be eliminated, so she avoided showing any strength.
In the end, Natalie had the best strategy – align yourself with the most hated...
For the first time, WRAL.com live streamed live behind the scenes footage of the WRAL Tower lighting on Tuesday.
For about an hour, I carried around a laptop computer and a DV camcorder around the WRAL studios. (My arms are sore today!)
Through host site Justin.tv, people got a glimpse of The Sound Machine band preparing to play several holiday songs, Ken Smith's thoughts on holiday music, and Kelcey Carlson's shoe dilemma.
The footage wasn't always clear and the audio maybe needs some work. But for our first attempt, it was pretty good.
Most people are thankful for family, friends, health, etc. While I am thankful for those things too, I like to compile a list of the things I am thankful for in pop culture each year.
I love Adam Lambert. He has an amazing voice, great make-up and a stage presence that was unlike anything "American Idol" has ever seen.
So what was he thinking during his American Music Awards performance?
(For anyone that missed it, he led around dancers on dog leashes, shoved their heads into his crotch multiple times, and made out with his male keyboardist.)
Now it is obvious that the AMAs expected his performance to be racy. They did save it for last. It aired just before 11 p.m. But did anyone actually watch his rehearsals? Or did he change things at the last minute?
I think the reason for the performance can be traced back to his musical influences. He loves Madonna – whose own racy performances used to give the censors fits. She also had at least one video banned from MTV due to its explicit nature.
So Adam pushed the envelope. (OK, he tore up the envelope.) But how will it affect his burgeoning career?
I'm compiling a list of the top entertainment stories this year. What are your thoughts?
Obviously, Michael Jackson's death needs to be at the top of the list. What about the saga of Jon and Kate? Kanye West and Taylor Swift?
American Idol was pretty great this year with Chapel Hill's Anoop Desai, breakout star Adam Lambert and winner Kris Allen.
What about some of your favorite TV shows and movies of the year?
I am loving "White Collar," "Modern Family," "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," "Leverage," "Big Bang Theory," "How I Met Your Mother" and "Psych." My favorite movie this year was "The Hangover."
The national competition pits 64 unsigned country, bluegrass, folk, southern rock and Americana artists against each other in four different brackets.
Each bracket was selected by a country artist. D-Sass is competing in Jewel’s bracket.
The winner will travel to Nashville to record their own CMT Studio 330 Sessions, play a private showcase with A&R executives at Valory Music and will meet country star Reba backstage. The winner will be announced Dec. 15.
