CARY, N.C. — Wake County school board members approved enrollment caps for 10 schools for the 2015-16 school year Tuesday night.

But board members postponed a decision on capping Enloe High School until they receive more information regarding overflow options.

Broughton High was proposed as Enloe’s overflow school, but the number of students capped out of Enloe could significantly exceed Broughton’s capacity, school officials said.

The 10 capped schools are a reduction from the 20 schools capped for the current school year. Caps are placed in anticipation of high growth within a school’s base attendance.

A cap does not necessarily mean students will be turned away, school officials said. Of the 20 schools with enrollment caps this year, only 12 diverted students to overflow schools, the district said. Some of those schools invited its base students back mid-year as seats opened.

Enrollment caps will be removed from 14 schools: Alston Ridge Elementary; Brooks Elementary; Cedar Fork Elementary; Combs Elementary; Forest Pines Elementary; Green Elementary; Holly Ridge Elementary; Holly Springs Elementary; Jones Dairy Elementary; Lacy Elementary; Leesville Elementary; North Ridge Elementary; Apex High and Holly Springs High.

Caps will remain at Hodge Road Elementary, Holly Grove Elementary, Hunter Elementary, Mills Park Elementary, Walnut Creek Elementary and Mills Park Middle.

Caps will be placed at Cary Elementary, Davis Drive Middle, Heritage High and Panther Creek High.

“The fact that up to 11 schools still could be capped points to the continued challenges of managing rapid growth,” the district said in a statement.
