Enrollment caps approved for 10 Wake schools

But board members postponed a decision on capping Enloe High School until they receive more information regarding overflow options.

Broughton High was proposed as Enloe’s overflow school, but the number of students capped out of Enloe could significantly exceed Broughton’s capacity, school officials said.

The 10 capped schools are a reduction from the 20 schools capped for the current school year. Caps are placed in anticipation of high growth within a school’s base attendance.

A cap does not necessarily mean students will be turned away, school officials said. Of the 20 schools with enrollment caps this year, only 12 diverted students to overflow schools, the district said. Some of those schools invited its base students back mid-year as seats opened.

Caps will be placed at Cary Elementary, Davis Drive Middle, Heritage High and Panther Creek High.

“The fact that up to 11 schools still could be capped points to the continued challenges of managing rapid growth,” the district said in a statement.
