Water seepage led to Raleigh parking lot crack

Posted February 4, 2016

Engineers were gathered Thursday afternoon at an Oberlin Road business where a section of the parking lot split open.

Earlier in the day, the Raleigh Fire Marshall and city building inspectors were trying to determine if people in the building were in danger. According to the building owners, they determined there was no immediate threat to anyone in the building and the companies inside the building were operating as usual.

Zach Clayton, manager of America’s Cup LLC which owns the building, said two separate engineering firms were called in to determine what caused the crack. They said that built-up water seeped under the parking lot and created the crack.

A tarp was placed over the parking lot Thursday afternoon in order to make sure additional water could not get into the crack. Clayton said that the parking lot will be dug up as soon as possible, in order to determine how deep it goes Once the root cause of the crack is addressed, the retaining wall around the parking lot will be rebuild or reinforced.

The Raleigh Fire Chief said that the building next to the parking lot is much stronger and is in no danger.
