Friday marked the first of two days and 100 miles of deals along U.S. Highway 301 north and south across the state. The second annual 301 Endless Yard Sale winds through communities from Roanoke Rapids to Dunn on Friday and Saturday, featuring vendors as varied as local businesses, bakers and those looking to clean out the closets.

Donna Bailey-Taylor, Johnston County’s tourism director, said that in its first year the sale was an economic boon and drew bargain hunters to the area.

“People were here from out of town, and they were staying in our hotels and eating in our restaurants,” she said. “It was a great event.”

Last year’s sale was a destination spot for Edna Luper, who sold furniture and home decorations.

She was so swamped selling her wares that she had to call for backup.

“They were there to buy,” Luper said.

The sale was such a success in 2013 that organizers expanded from one county – Johnston – to four this year. Most vendors will be open for business from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday in yards, on sidewalks and in parking lots along the route.
