WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A piece of luggage near a trash can at the finish line of Sunday morning's Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Winston-Salem prompted local police to evacuate the area of an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 people.

WFMY-TV in Greensboro reported that a public safety officer at Salem College noticed the suspicious item on Salem Street around 10:30 a.m. after the area had already been checked prior to the event.

The Winston-Salem Police Department's Hazardous Device Disposal team later determined the luggage was empty.

Police cleared the scene and race organizers and participants were allowed to return to the area about an hour later.
