Embattled charter school headmaster on leave of absence from state board

Posted August 23, 2012

— A former charter school headmaster facing sexual battery charges has taken a leave of absence from the North Carolina Alliance for Public Charter Schools Board of Directors.

Brandon Smith, who headed up East Wake Academy in Zebulon, was fired in March after two female employees accused him of inappropriately touching them.

He was charged with two counts of sexual battery in May.

In response to questions from WRAL News, Robert Landry, chairman of the board for the Alliance for Public Charter Schools, said Thursday that Smith, who was at the board's meeting Tuesday, voluntarily took a leave of absence, effective immediately.

Landry declined to comment further on the matter.

Smith, who has denied any inappropriate conduct, is also fighting the accusations in a civil lawsuit against his accusers and the charter school.

He served as East Wake Academy's headmaster for a decade.

Anybody associated with this "Alliance" ought to be ashamed of themselves for even having the Board that they do.

So many people commenting who have no idea what they are talking about. We are a society who encourages victims to come forward and then we attack them. If you check the court calendar website for cases in wake county, you will see that Smith's case got moved to SUPERIOR court this week. (Search Smith,b no space after the comma to see.) Obviously there is something to these allegations. Seems to me that everyone needs to back off until the case is done. And he should step down from the Alloance board until the case is done, especially considering the is suing the school for a million dollars!

I guess many of you are forgetting previous problems with this man at another school. There are also teachers who have left EWA because of the former head masters sexual advances.

Sounds to me like a couple of women are trying to make a fast buck.. If there is no sure evidence the charges should be dropped and Mr. Smith should get a huge check with numerous zeros.
