TARBORO, N.C. — Phone provider Embarq said Friday it would close a call center in Tarboro by January, laying off 65 people.

The Tarboro Small Business Sales and Care Call Center is closing as part of a continuing process to eliminate redundancy in the company, which was formed from the merger of Sprint and Nextel, spokesman Charles Fleckenstein said.

The 65 employees will be encouraged to apply for other jobs within the company, Fleckenstein said.

The call center is part of a larger Embarq operation in Tarboro, but other workers wouldn't be affected by the closing, he said.
