ELON, N.C. — An assistant dean at Elon University has resigned following reports that he drank and acted inappropriately during a tailgate party at the school's recent homecoming festivities, officials said Thursday.

Scott Nelson, the assistant dean of students responsible for disciplining students for violations of Elon's alcohol policies, resigned Oct. 30 after a meeting with Smith Jackson, the university's vice president for student life and dean of students, officials said.

Reports surfaced that Nelson drank with students and alumni at a tailgate party before Elon's Oct. 27 homecoming game against the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. Instead of shutting down the tailgate area during the game, which was his responsibility, Nelson continued to drink, made some questionable remarks and "interacted inappropriately" with students, officials said.

"Elon University takes its responsibility to maintain a positive environment for students with utmost importance," Jackson said in a statement.
