ELM CITY, N.C. — Wilson County was among the counties hard hit by Hurricane Florence just a few weeks ago. There, in Elm City, the Pittman family is living in their garage, waiting for repairs to a home damaged by a tornado that followed that storm.

With high winds and heavy rain expected as Tropical Storm Michael passes, the Pittmans have a warning for others: Stay alert to weather warnings.

The Pittman home on South Barnes Street was damaged in a tornado that touched down during Hurricane Florence. Now, with another storm on the way, the family waits anxiously and watched their tarp-covered roof.

And they are not alone. Other homes in the area were damaged by falling trees, a possibility that raises its ugly head again with Michael's high winds.

The Pittmans said that before the tornado touched down, they got an alert on the WRAL News app that gave them time to take shelter.
As a precaution, schools in Wilson County are closed Thursday and will operate on a two-hour delay on Friday.
