Ellmers debates Aiken for US House district in NC

Posted October 6, 2014

— The Republican former nurse who upset a congressman to win a seat in the U.S. House is matching wits with a former entertainer who wants to take her place.

Incumbent Congresswoman Renee Ellmers meets Democrat and former pop singer Clay Aiken for a debate Monday in Pinehurst. They're vying to represent the 2nd Congressional District. It's a district shaped like an uneven U that includes Asheboro, Fayetteville, communities surrounding Fort Bragg and suburbs south and west of Raleigh.

The hour-long debate before delegates to a North Carolina Bankers Association conference will be broadcast at 7 p.m. Monday on WRAL and at 11 p.m. on WRAZ Fox 50. The video will also be available for viewing on WRAL.com through Election Day.

WRAL News anchor David Crabtree will moderate the debate.

Ellmers is seeking her third term since narrowly beating longtime Democratic congressman Bob Etheridge in 2010.

Aiken first gained fame as a singer on "American Idol."

I wonder why Aiken didn't run for office where he grew up and has lived all his life, Raleigh?

It would be great if all ballots required a "none of the above" block you could select. It would make a great statement on actual voter attitudes. Unfortunately, they do not, so you have to make your decision on the lesser of two evils. Or in this day of mainly a candidate's (or a PAC's) mudslinging, innuendo, or statements about what you are against, with no comments on what you are for and how you will achieve it, you vote for the party philosophy you agree with.

I don't recall Obama refusing to take his paycheck during the government shutdown. Should we get rid of him too?

Goodness. These 2 are the choices?

I wonder if he will lie like he did in that rolling stones interview when he was the 2nd runner up on Idol..

Of course, Renee's great experience was she was a nurse in Dunn, recent newcomer from Detroit, didn't like dirt farmers and didn't realize Ft. Bragg was in her district until last spring. I will give her this: She's had one heck of a facelift since I've seen her last. Good deal, as she "needed her paycheck" last October when she helped shut down the government.

Interesting. Ellmers was a nurse before being elected. Zero qualifications. And your comment is quite contrary to most conservatives who want to throw out the establishment and let regular people do the governing. If hating Dems is you only view you should consider not voting

So he was a governor for two terms before entering politics? The man must have truly been a deity!

The Voter ID law actually outlawed straight party voting. It was one of those unrelated add-ons to the bill. Sorry to inform you of that change.

Remember, if you like your plan you can keep it.

ISIS will not directly threaten the US.

Ebola will not come to the US.

We did not sell weapons to Mexican drug cartels.

We are not monitoring the American people without cause.

All statements by the party that Aiken supports. No offense but, the fact that he is famous and gay is the only thing carrying him.

Heath Shuler tried this in a District that had Asheville in it, granted he was just a football player and lasted ONE term do to lack of ability!!!

Here's the haterific, another made up word but sounds good, neither side gives a flip about you, the previous 7 Presidents proved that, especially Johnson and Nixon!!! One got us into a war we were getting out of and the other resigned because he bugged one office not the entire country!!!!

So once again, Clay IS incompetent, he degree means nothing because he is a singer first!! Ellmers is a career politician.

I'd say don't vote for either!!
