Saturday is Independent Bookstore Day, a day to celebrate the hundreds of independent bookstores across the country with lots of special events.

Independent bookstores, who are part of the Independent Booksellers of Piedmont North Carolina, have been gearing up for the big day all month. The group is a collaboration of a dozen independent bookstores located in the Piedmont area of North Carolina. All month, shoppers have been able to pick up a field guide to all of the group's stores. Book lovers were encouraged to visit each of the shops across the region.

Now, many are planning special events for kids and adults on Saturday and offering special merchandise that's only available on Independent Bookstore Day. Here's what's happening for kids. Follow the links for more details about all of the programs offered at the stores (including many for adults) on Saturday.
