Election Wrap: NC goes GOP (mostly)

Republicans had the better of it in Tuesday's midterm election in North Carolina.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Republicans had the better of it in Tuesday's midterm election in North Carolina.

State House Speaker Thom Tillis knocked off Democratic U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan, helping the GOP seize control of the Senate. Republicans also lost three net seats in the state House but picked up one in the state Senate, maintaining veto-proof majorities in both chambers.

Three judges with Democratic ties appear to have won seats on the state Supreme Court. The races are nonpartisan, but parties clearly back certain candidates.

Wake County also proved to be a bit of an outlier, with Democrats defeating four incumbent Republicans on the county Board of Commissioners – the seven-member board will be all Democrats after December – and a Democrat winning the race for district attorney.
