DURHAM, N.C. — Authorities were searching Wednesday for a missing 79-year-old man who was last seen in the yard of his Hillsborough home.

A Silver Alert was issued early Wednesday for John Randolph Trammell, who has diabetes and is in the early stages of dementia, investigators with the Orange County Sheriff's Office said.

Trammell was last seen outside 1705 Old N.C. Highway 10, investigators said. He was wearing a short-sleeved shirt and light-colored pants.

He is described as white, 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing 140 pounds. He has hazel eyes and grey hair, but is mostly bald.

Trammell might be driving a silver 2002 Hyundai Sonata with North Carolina license plate MVZ1193.

Developed in 2007, the Silver Alert system quickly notifies the public about missing endangered adults who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease.

It also allows caregivers and nursing homes to report a person missing. In the past, only a family member could report an adult missing.
