Elderly Kinston woman drowns in backyard pond

— An 84-year-old Kinston woman drowned Thursday evening in a backyard pond, authorities said.

Alva Waldie went to feed fish in the pond off Buddy Williams Road, and family members found her floating in the pond shortly before 6 p.m., authorities said.

Sandy Bottom Volunteer Fire Department first responders, Lenoir County paramedics and a detective with the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office arrived to find family members and neighbors trying to revive Waldie. She was taken to Lenoir Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

    Such a tragic accident. As a former rescue chief, what a horrible way to die. My prayers & condolences to her family. May she now be in a better place forever & may they find comfort in that.
