— An Edgecombe County deputy shot and killed a man brandishing a knife Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

The deputy, whose name wasn't released, was responding to a domestic disturbance at a home near U.S. Highway 64 Bypass and N.C. Highway 33 outside of Tarboro at about 12:20 p.m. when the incident occurred, authorities said. The deputy was getting out of his patrol car when an unidentified man armed with a knife quickly approached him, authorities said.

The deputy shot the man and killed him.

The State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to review the shooting, which is standard protocol with an officer-involved shooting in North Carolina. The deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation.

I'm glad the deputy is safe as well. While I don't know the whole story, they prepare for situations like this, and I'm sure the deputy did what he felt he needed to. I respect law enforcement very much and think they do a great job of serving and protecting.

But why could he not wound him instead of killing him?--with whiny voice...

But on a serious note, it was stupid to bring a knife to a gun fight. Guess that qualified for a Darwin Award. Glad the deputy is safe.

I guess this answers the question about why the cops were speeding down Main Street in Tarboro at lunchtime...BTW, that's not really Tarboro, that's Princeville.
