PINETOPS, N.C. — An Edgecombe County mother has been charged with murder in connection with the March 2016 death of her 10-month-old infant.

The Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a deceased infant at a home on Atwater Lane in Pinetops last March.

The child’s mother, Chelsey Nicole Webb, 19, told authorities her 10-month-old daughter had choked while eating pieces of chicken.

An autopsy revealed the baby did not choke on food, but had died as the result of trauma that had been intentionally inflicted.

Webb, of 2562 Bynum Farm Road, was arrested Feb. 21 and charged with first-degree murder and felony child abuse. She was being held in the Edgecombe County Detention Center without bond.
