— An East Carolina University graduate student died Monday in a wreck in Wilson County, police said.

Amanda Kelly, 24, of Ontario, Canada, was eastbound on U.S. Highway 264 Bypass at about 8:20 a.m. when her 2000 Ford Taurus ran off the right side of the highway near Black Creek Road, police said. Investigators said they believe Kelly over-corrected, and the Taurus crossed the median and went into the westbound lanes.

The Taurus collided head-on with a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Johnnie Page III, 31, of Sims, police said. Kelly was killed in the wreck, and Page was treated at Wilson Medical Center for his injuries and released.

Traffic was rerouted off westbound U.S. 264 Bypass onto Black Creek Road for five hours while police investigated the wreck and cleared the highway.

I have two children at ECU and a third in high school. Every time I read about these families losing their young adult children in care accidents it is awful. I cannot imagine their pain.

I saw this right after it happened. It was awful. Was on my way to Greenville, and a couple hours later, on the way back, they had 264 shut down. The driver's side of the car was just awful.

This is horrible. Prayers for the family... I know that exit pretty well as my son and daughter-in-law live off that road. I don't recall seeing the safety cables in that area.

NCcarguy - I hope that you also pass your concerns on to the NCDOT. They can't look into it if nobody mentions it to them.
