Glenn Isaac Darden

EDITOR'S NOTE: All charges against Glen Isaac Darden were later dropped because the victim was no longer interested in prosecuting the case, according to Wayne County Assistant District Attorney Curtis Stackhouse.

The head varsity boys basketball coach at Eastern Wayne High School is accused in a sexual assault on a female student, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

Glen Isaac Darden, 59, of the 2500 block of HB Lewis Road in Clinton, has been charged with indecent liberties with a student. Deputies said the student talked to a school resource officer a day after the alleged incident, which prompted an investigation.

Darden was arrested Dec. 13 and held on a $1,000 secured bond.

Ken Derksen, a spokesman with Wayne County Public Schools, said Darden was placed on unpaid administrative leave the day of his arrest. His status was changed to unpaid on Wednesday.

Derksen said Darden was hired by the school system in March 2003 and has coached basketball at the school since then. He is also an instructional assistant. Derksen could not provide more information about Darden’s leave because of personnel laws.

The Goldsboro Police Department charged former Wayne School of Engineering teacher Benjamin Randall Strickland, 28, 110 N. John St. Apt. D, with one count of indecent liberties with a student.

Strickland, free on $2,000 unsecured bond, is scheduled for a first appearance in Wayne County Court Monday.

Wayne County Public Schools Communications Director Ken Derksen confirmed Friday that Strickland was employed, from August 2009 through Oct. 3, as an English teacher at Wayne School of Engineering.

"At no time was Mr. Strickland under investigation by the school system," Derksen said.

According to a press release issued by police, Strickland has been under investigation since November when a female student made "a disclosure of having a relationship with a teacher."

In all truth I don't think anyone has a right to judge if you don't know the person and wasn't there during the incident. Anyone can be wrongly accused of doing anything if someone is willing to stand up as a victim. You would be in the same place easily.

$1,000 secured bond? Is that a typo?

If he is guilty, I hope justice will be served. I do believe that the bail was too low to fit the crime.

I hope he's not guilty and it turns out not to be true.

59 years old. He should be absolutely ashamed of himself. May justice be served.
