Eastern NC deputy accused of having sex with prisoner during jail transport

Patrick Batts is charged with sexual contact by a custodian, obstruction of justice and first-degree sex offense, according to WITN.

A Gates County sheriff's deputy has been charged after authorities say he had sex with a prisoner while transporting her from the Gates County jail to the Hertford County jail.

Patrick Batts is charged with sexual contact by a custodian, obstruction of justice and first-degree sex offense, according to WITN.

According to the State Bureau of Investigation, Batts told officials the prisoner had escaped. Surveillance video from the incident showed that Batts had let the prisoner get out of his cruiser.

Batts was being held Wednesday on a $150,000 secured bond.
