East Wake Academy's ex-headmaster indicted

Posted February 28, 2013

— The former headmaster of East Wake Academy has been indicted on charges stemming from allegations by two school employees who say he acted inappropriately toward them.

Brandon Smith, who was the top administrator at the Zebulon charter school for 10 years, was indicted Tuesday on two counts of sexual battery and two counts of assault on a female.

The two employees claim that Smith inappropriately touched them, and one of them told authorities that he solicited her for sexual acts, according to a search warrant in the case.

Smith was fired in March, and he later sued his accusers, but a judge dismissed the lawsuit in November.

Smith has denied the claims.

Only 9 comments?!?! Where are all the Brandon Smith supporters from last March? You know... The ones who bashed the women and all their supporters?? Not much you all can say now, huh?

hp277: "Another charter school all-star." Actually this is an aberration for charter schools. Smith was employed in the Durham County schools previously and was in trouble there as well.

"This does NOT reflect on EWA or their students. This is one of the best schools in Wake County. Please be careful what you say about this school and the students there. They work hard to be the best." - computer trainer

I agree that EWA is one of the best schools in Wake County. It has an excellent teaching staff, strong parental support, and very talented students. If my comment below yours was taken otherwise, I apologize.

    Long overdue!

Sadly this travesty reflected badly on East Wake Academy which is an excellent charter school.

Did he have a history of such behavior at other schools?

    - Yes, that was reported in one of the earlier stories. If I'm not mistaken that happened in Durham and the person dropped the charges after a while - not sure why.

Sad end to a man's long career rise.

Did he have a history of such behavior at other schools? If so, there is a lack of honesty in reporting and recording such behavior, which in the end, allows a man to escalate into criminal behavior. "Nip it in the bud" says Deputy Fife, and he was right.
