Gov. Mike Easley

Gov. Mike Easley will testify Thursday during a U.S. House Agriculture Committee hearing examining the effects of the drought in North Carolina.

U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge of Lillington requested the hearing as part of his efforts to secure federal disaster assistance payments for North Carolina farmers.

“Without assistance, the drought threatens to affect not only farmers but all of North Carolina’s rural economy," Etheridge said. "Congress must step in to ensure that farmers receive assistance so that they may continue to provide our nation’s families with a safe and abundant food supply.

The hearing, which starts at 10 a.m., will be broadcast live at http://agriculture.house.gov/hearings/audio.html.
