Easley seeks to regain law license

Published: 2013-01-08 14:16:00

Former Gov. Mike Easley is trying to win back his law license, following his November 2010 conviction for campaign finance fraud.

Easley's law license was suspended shortly after the guilty plea, pending the conclusion of formal disciplinary proceedings.

Last January, the North Carolina State Bar ordered that the suspension remain in place for another year. A disciplinary panel voted against disbarring Easley, determining that there was no evidence that Easley knew the details of his campaign finance reports, he took responsibility for the shortcomings of his campaign and he expressed remorse.

With the suspension period over, Easley filed a petition last Friday with the State Bar to have his license reinstated, officials said. There was no word on when any action would be taken on the request.

Easley entered an Alford plea to one felony count of certifying a false campaign finance report. In an Alford plea, a defendant pleads guilty, while maintaining his innocence, and admits it is in his best interest to take the plea deal because there is sufficient evidence to find him guilty.

The charge stemmed from omitting an October 2006 campaign flight, which was provided by a long-time supporter, from quarterly reports.

The State Board of Elections ordered Easley's campaign in 2009 to pay $100,000 for dozens of flights the former governor took aboard donors' private planes during the 2000 and 2004 campaigns.

good luck with that mike..and you probably don't want to try to practice in Maine!!!

I guess Mary's retirement won't be enough after all.

Easley makes me wonder where was WRAL with respect to Promises kept during his tenure and Beverly as well. Sure looks like they are setting a comprehensive system up for our Republican Governor? Reeks of hypocrisy.

Why should he get it back? He intentionally broke the law and he was an elected official. I say NO! He violated the trust of the people of this State. It’s time to get tough on elected officials who break the law.

The will give it back as he's part of the Good Ol Boy Network.

Ridiculous politician.

Never again should he be able to practice law. He scoffed at the law and made the profession look really bad.

This guy arranged for his country club to water its greens at a time when residents of Raleigh couldn't even wash their cars.

Easley is the worst kind of individual in my book, which is to say a person without a conscience who knows precisely where the line is between legality and illegality and who stays just a fraction of a millimeter on the legal side.

The only thing he deserves to get is PRISON TIME.

What a joke!

"He shouldn't get it............him and his wife's inflated retirement salary should be enough to live off of." - outdoor592000

The poor guy probably hasn't even had lobster or filet mignon yet this week. Show some compassion.

Great, we will have a felon defending felons. Such a sad state our legal system is in being there is no justice system if this is allowed.

give me a break, of course he'll get it back. the good ole boy syndicate isn't going away anytime in the near future.

The Bar should be ashamed of this guy. He's a crook and want's his law license back? NEVER!! Let him do like the rest of us - get a job!!!

He either gets the law license or a doublewide.

NO!NO!NO! A thousand times no.

He get should never get his law license back after the crimes he's committed against the people of North Carolina.

He made his bed, needs to lie in it and try to find another profession or job, or none at all-I'm sure he has enough socked away.

Hmmm... felons cannot have a gun but they can have a law license?

He should not get them back.

I think not. He and she have enough made lying already

I agree with the earlier comments... Continue the license suspension forever, he's a crook.

I just wonder if they ever took away his guns?

Why don't he write a book like the other well known felons? He could do the talk circuit like slick willie does.

if this was a guy WITHOUT connection or power, he's still be in jail. Crook.

why does he need to return to practicing law? His wife Mary is now on the dole with state taxpayers and that ought to adequately take care of their needs. Plus, would you hire a discredited Easley as your attorney?

Don't forget, he also swindled a deal on some coastal property. I thought dishonesty was grounds for disbarment, but it hard for lawyers to police themselves when the bad ones make soooooo much money for the good ones. He lost his license for several reasons, keep it gone.

He should be in jail.

Because he is a politican and a lawyer which are both above the Law. Wonder if the felony charges are still against him or if they were dropped by another lawyer / politican.

Oh Bev..............

Am I the only one that thinks this was all shoveled under the rug.

OH WELL GIVE HIM HIS LICENSE BACK.PEOPLE HAS DONE WORSE THINGS AND HE DOES NEED TO EARN A LIVING!

z-man: i personaly fail to see thw deference between a law license an a gun for the both of them are used to steal from hard working indivsuals. he should ever never be allowed to regain his law licenses not ever. even if he has to go on welfare . not only that he an is wonderful wife will surely be able to get along well on her recently aquired settlement form the state of north carolina thatshe shoudl have never been allowed to aquire at all. the states attorneys general office should have fought this settlement tooth an nail prior to allowing for it to be paid out of taxpayers funds. but they are all attorneys an they will all look out for one another in the first place thank you

computer trainer,

There are plenty of people each year that enter into an Alford plea and are truly innocent. Sometimes, what is in your best interest and your family's best interest is to swallow medicine even if you are innocent. Because sadly, once charged you can never be 100% innocent, but only not guilt.

they should run him and bet out of town for "doing nothing"

FRAUD. send him to jail

he should be in jail!!!

Hans, hope ur trying to be funny.

"Back in the day" when Easley first ran for Governor, with his background, etc. - I thought he'd be good governor and I voted for him. With considerably LESS enthusiasm I voted for him for re-election. Hey! We all make mistakes. He was not a "good" governor, even less so in his second administration - and he was a "criminal" on top of it all. I don't know what the pattern has been with regard to attorney's with suspended licenses having the suspension lifted. It may be that for something similar to what he did a one year suspension is the "norm". However, IMO his case is different! Why/How is it different? He was the GOVERNOR when he committed his "crime"!!! He was not the average "Joe" attorney when he committed the felony-- HE WAS THE GOVERNOR!!! Not sure what the appropriate suspension should be according to precedent, but Easley or anyone who did what he did while GOVERNOR - SHOULD BE DISBARRED!!!

Nah.

To add to my last comment-- another "CRIME" was committed when NC State and the State "settled" with Mary Easley by "adjusting" her retirement as it was done. I know of many employees of the State of NC, including those working at NC State University, who have worked many more years than Mary and will not have a retirement even close to what she has! Mary Easley came across to me as having an attitude of "entitlement" - as in "I'm the GOVERNOR'S wife... I "deserve" and am entitled to a "high paying job"! Sometimes it is worth it to NOT settle such a case - even though it costs more to do so - simply for PRINCIPLE!!!

Sure, reinstate him. As soon as he repays all State benefits and forgoes them forever. Same for the taker that shares his bed.

It's supposed to be punishment, not a hiatus.

Run of the mill attorneys get permanently um, darned to heck, for less. It is a slap in the face to hard working but flawed attorneys who got permanently disbarred.

Aw... ain't that nice. The convicted criminal wants his law license back.

How about "NO"!

I thought to practice Law you have to be a "legal" person?

He and his wife deserve each other.

The easley Crooks should be kicked out of NC. The state Deserves better than putting up with those two Crumpets.

I know a retail outfit that needs someone to mount tires on customers cars, he might give them a try. I must tell him up front, they do require a background check.

Easley or anyone who did what he did while GOVERNOR - SHOULD BE DISBARRED!!! Objective Scientist January 8, 2013 4:24 p.m. =========== Meby he can get the felony overturned to reprimand.

He's a FELON. Case closed. How could the state bar even give more than 60 seconds worth of consideration to this?

Almost a 100% here say no. I bet he gets it back.
