Easley seeks to regain law license

Published: 2013-01-08 14:16:00

Former Gov. Mike Easley is trying to win back his law license, following his November 2010 conviction for campaign finance fraud.

Easley's law license was suspended shortly after the guilty plea, pending the conclusion of formal disciplinary proceedings.

Last January, the North Carolina State Bar ordered that the suspension remain in place for another year. A disciplinary panel voted against disbarring Easley, determining that there was no evidence that Easley knew the details of his campaign finance reports, he took responsibility for the shortcomings of his campaign and he expressed remorse.

With the suspension period over, Easley filed a petition last Friday with the State Bar to have his license reinstated, officials said. There was no word on when any action would be taken on the request.

Easley entered an Alford plea to one felony count of certifying a false campaign finance report. In an Alford plea, a defendant pleads guilty, while maintaining his innocence, and admits it is in his best interest to take the plea deal because there is sufficient evidence to find him guilty.

The charge stemmed from omitting an October 2006 campaign flight, which was provided by a long-time supporter, from quarterly reports.

The State Board of Elections ordered Easley's campaign in 2009 to pay $100,000 for dozens of flights the former governor took aboard donors' private planes during the 2000 and 2004 campaigns.

We all know the State bar is a joke ! This state is so corrupt !

Difference between a good lawyer and a great lawyer. A good lawyer knows the law. A great lawyer knows the Judge. If this happens we will truly know the whole legal situation in the state is corrupt including the state bar association.

He will get back his license and once again go on NC payroll as if he was an honest citizen and his wife will also be back on the payroll seems like the state retirement is not enough for him and his wife to live on

"For those that can't figure it out I am joking, Easley should have served time for his crimes."

No he shouldn't have, didn't do anything wrong. Hope he does get his license back. He was a great governor. Won 2 terms and could probably run again in a few years and win another term. And yes that is allowed in NC. Jim Hunt was governor for 16 years, led for 8, took a break, came back and run and won for 8 more.

Mike Easley should get his law license back. While he was convicted of campaign finance fraud, it doesn't amount to permanently taking away his law license. What I hope for as a Democrat is he won't get involved in the future with NC politics. I blame him in part for the defeats Democrats recently suffered in elections. As a former State Attorney General and Governor he knew better, but apparently still chose to do things he was charged with.

He should get his law license back. This was nothing but a witch hunt and waste of taxpayer dollars. Hope he does.

Ole Mike Sleasly baweeee!

On second thought, don't reinstate him. Then everyone will know he's the guy who messed up so badly he has to live off his wife, and NO GOLD-DIGGERS WILL LOOK TWICE AT HIM!

BWA HA HA!

ofcourse he will get his law lincense back --this is north carolina=== what'd you expect?

Say it ain't so....... Surely a criminal lawyer will not be given another chance to profit for his crimes....

If all these comments on here are so negative Easley, who the heck kept putting him in office?

If he does get his license back then his punishment will amount to nothing more than a slap on the wrist. After the Duke Lacrosse fiasco and hiding pertinent information - he knew he was wrong, but he did it anyway. So, in essence giving him his license back will only say "it's okay, you were dishonest, but you can have it back anyway. Get over yourself Easley.....you got caught red handed....take your punishment like a man and go along your way.

He should remain retired with he and his wife living on the six figure state retirement that comes to the 'big wheel' deals. I like the man as a personality, but the one two punch of his wife's NCSU job and his misconduct cut his credibility for me. His, and his wife's job were a symbol of why the Democratic Party lost their absolute power after more than a century.

I thought he was in jail.

Easley and his money-grubbing wife should go away and stay out of the public eye. How that woman can sleep at night after bilking NCSU out of money is beyond belief.

He should not get his license back, but knowing how the bar assosiation works and their past history, he'll get em.

"I don't think he should have a lifetime sentence for his crimes. Give him his license back." rwest134

You probably think the $1,000 fine was enough too. Very sad.

Easly proved crime does pay.

I don't think he should have a lifetime sentence for his crimes. Give him his license back.

...."Almost a 100% here say no. I bet he gets it back...."

pfffft...what do WE know...??? We just supply the rich and powerful politicians with OUR stolen tax cash to redistribute to the scum for votes.....!!!!!

..."Cut Mikey some slack, he paid a whopping $1,000 fine. That certainly was punishment enough for his misdeeds..."

Yeah and his little lawyer friend aka "little Mike" went to jail for this scum bag.....!!!!! Tell him to go to Washington and apply for his license...he will fit right in....!!!!!

Well see how much integrity the bar has with this one, he should have had it revoked, but atleast make him serve out the suspension, please?? is that t much to ask.

"NO one who is truly innocent is going to plea an Alford plea."

-- I beg to differ. Innocent people plea guilty - it happens. A sad byproduct of the system, but very much there.

You're right, bestrobert . . .this state and her people deserved better than that political scum. We (the people) have been "had" so many times by so many politicians which is why it's so very important to vote (voice) our preferences. We do still have a say and we need to keep a say! Always.

Cut Mikey some slack, he paid a whopping $1,000 fine. That certainly was punishment enough for his misdeeds......

For those that can't figure it out I am joking, Easley should have served time for his crimes.

He is going to practice law! I guess he knows enough about how to get around it! He and his wife both were great for NC politics!

um, disbarment should mean THAT'S IT

Suprised Bev didn't pardon him....

Another in the great list of fine, upstanding Democrat lawmakers in NC. They made me miss the heck out of Jim Hunt.

NO! He should not get his license back ever!!! He should be behind bars for a long time!!!

Only a privileged FELON ex-lawyer would be able to acquire any sort of attention from the bar. He should be treated like any other criminal.

Almost a 100% here say no. I bet he gets it back.

He's a FELON. Case closed. How could the state bar even give more than 60 seconds worth of consideration to this?

Easley or anyone who did what he did while GOVERNOR - SHOULD BE DISBARRED!!! Objective Scientist January 8, 2013 4:24 p.m. =========== Meby he can get the felony overturned to reprimand.

I know a retail outfit that needs someone to mount tires on customers cars, he might give them a try. I must tell him up front, they do require a background check.

The easley Crooks should be kicked out of NC. The state Deserves better than putting up with those two Crumpets.

He and his wife deserve each other.

I thought to practice Law you have to be a "legal" person?

Aw... ain't that nice. The convicted criminal wants his law license back.

How about "NO"!

Run of the mill attorneys get permanently um, darned to heck, for less. It is a slap in the face to hard working but flawed attorneys who got permanently disbarred.

Sure, reinstate him. As soon as he repays all State benefits and forgoes them forever. Same for the taker that shares his bed.

It's supposed to be punishment, not a hiatus.

To add to my last comment-- another "CRIME" was committed when NC State and the State "settled" with Mary Easley by "adjusting" her retirement as it was done. I know of many employees of the State of NC, including those working at NC State University, who have worked many more years than Mary and will not have a retirement even close to what she has! Mary Easley came across to me as having an attitude of "entitlement" - as in "I'm the GOVERNOR'S wife... I "deserve" and am entitled to a "high paying job"! Sometimes it is worth it to NOT settle such a case - even though it costs more to do so - simply for PRINCIPLE!!!

Nah.

"Back in the day" when Easley first ran for Governor, with his background, etc. - I thought he'd be good governor and I voted for him. With considerably LESS enthusiasm I voted for him for re-election. Hey! We all make mistakes. He was not a "good" governor, even less so in his second administration - and he was a "criminal" on top of it all. I don't know what the pattern has been with regard to attorney's with suspended licenses having the suspension lifted. It may be that for something similar to what he did a one year suspension is the "norm". However, IMO his case is different! Why/How is it different? He was the GOVERNOR when he committed his "crime"!!! He was not the average "Joe" attorney when he committed the felony-- HE WAS THE GOVERNOR!!! Not sure what the appropriate suspension should be according to precedent, but Easley or anyone who did what he did while GOVERNOR - SHOULD BE DISBARRED!!!

Hans, hope ur trying to be funny.

he should be in jail!!!

FRAUD. send him to jail

they should run him and bet out of town for "doing nothing"

computer trainer,

There are plenty of people each year that enter into an Alford plea and are truly innocent. Sometimes, what is in your best interest and your family's best interest is to swallow medicine even if you are innocent. Because sadly, once charged you can never be 100% innocent, but only not guilt.

z-man: i personaly fail to see thw deference between a law license an a gun for the both of them are used to steal from hard working indivsuals. he should ever never be allowed to regain his law licenses not ever. even if he has to go on welfare . not only that he an is wonderful wife will surely be able to get along well on her recently aquired settlement form the state of north carolina thatshe shoudl have never been allowed to aquire at all. the states attorneys general office should have fought this settlement tooth an nail prior to allowing for it to be paid out of taxpayers funds. but they are all attorneys an they will all look out for one another in the first place thank you

OH WELL GIVE HIM HIS LICENSE BACK.PEOPLE HAS DONE WORSE THINGS AND HE DOES NEED TO EARN A LIVING!
