Easley's law license reinstated

Published: 2013-02-04 16:06:00

The North Carolina State Bar on Monday reinstated former Gov. Mike Easley's law license following his November 2010 conviction for a campaign finance violation.

Easley's law license was suspended shortly after the guilty plea, pending the conclusion of formal disciplinary proceedings.

The State Bar ordered a year ago that the suspension remain in place for another year. A disciplinary panel voted against disbarring Easley, determining that there was no evidence that he knew the details of his campaign finance reports, he took responsibility for the shortcomings of his campaign and he expressed remorse.

He filed a petition last month to have his license reinstated, and the State Bar didn't object to the request.

Easley entered an Alford plea to one felony count of certifying a false campaign finance report. In an Alford plea, a defendant pleads guilty, while maintaining his innocence, and admits it is in his best interest to take the plea deal because there is sufficient evidence to find him guilty.

The charge stemmed from omitting an October 2006 campaign flight, which was provided by a long-time supporter, from quarterly reports.

The State Board of Elections ordered Easley's campaign in 2009 to pay $100,000 for flights he took aboard donors' private planes during the 2000 and 2004 campaigns. Most of that fine remains unpaid.

for north carolina democrats there are 2 sets of laws..1 for those who vote...1 for those who are elected... just ask: Jim Black, Meg Scott Phipps, Frank Ballance and John Edwards

Easley is a convicted Felon with an unpaid fine. How does he get a license un-revoked without first paying the fine? You can't get your drivers license back if you haven't paid a tax or fine and it was revoked. Which NC Law firm will make him a partner first? Stay tuned...

Apparently the standards are pretty low to practice law.

Another crook with a lisence!!! NC Bar-watch him closely. This is on you!

Not surprised at all. Our Attorney bar assosication is and has always been a joke. Take time to read some laws passed last year and you'll see how powerful a group they are.

This is nothing new to me. I'm just tired of people thinking everything is fair and just. Apparently, there's an incentive to reinstate his license as this wouldn't have happened otherwise. Only reason won't fight is because all of us are too hooked on that drug called money.

This is a slap in the face to the citizens of North Carolina to allow this know felon to have a licence to practice what he obviously broke the code of justice while having a license. What a sad day.-taylay

a sad day? for who? the peasants of north carolina will do exactly as the peasants of russia will do --- you'll do exactly what you're told to do by yer goverment.

just shows that all attorneys are criminals. shines a great light on our states BAR and instills no confidence in our law system.

He needs to be right up there with the POTUS.

WOW! Instills a great faith in the NC Bar doesn't it?

they should draft payments from his retirement to pay these fines!

I guess the State Bar is no better than the criminals within it's ranks. Good job there guys, nothing to see here, we are only looking out for our own. Gives the good name back to lawyers!!!!

I'm not understanding how he could be allowed to continue to practice law when he was caught and convicted of an immoral act?? He got caught once but it leads me to wonder how many times he's done the very same thing and didn't get caught?? Oh wait, we are talking about lawyers aren't we... My mistake to think they all have morals...

He still has fines that are not paid???? If it were any other "attorney" the license would not have been reinstated until all fines were paid. What a joke.....

This is a slap in the face to the citizens of North Carolina to allow this know felon to have a licence to practice what he obviously broke the code of justice while having a license. What a sad day.

Gives a whole new spin on the title, "Criminal Lawyer"

As soneone who worked in the legal profession for several years, I can tell you that I can count on one hand with fingers left over the number of lawyers I would actually trust to represent me. I've seen the abuse that the dish out and it is appalling. I am not surprised that he got his license back because this type of behavior is actually rewarded instead of punished. If the Bar would actually enforce its Rules of Professional Conduct, the yellow pages listing of attorneys would be a lot smaller.

Next they will let Nyfong back in.....jeeeez

The North Carolina Bar Association show no integrity or responsibility in maintaining that convicted felons like Easlie be granted the right to retain his law licence. This is a slap in the face to the citizens of North Carolina to allow this know felon to have a licence to practice what he obviously broke the code of justice while having a license. What a sad day. The fox guarding the hen house. The bar association needs their house cleaned and replaced with people capable of restoring the justice system to some sort of integrity.

Give him his license ONLY after paying the fine.

What else is new? Nothing is truly illegal in North Carolina. If you steal all you have to do is give back what you stole, over a period of YEARS with no interest, and the charges will be dropped. What a joke. If you're going to be a crook, NC is for you.

money, money + big money !!!

Politics at its best! Corrupt at all levels. Police officers convicted of crimes should be allowed back on the police department after a few years. What a joke.

I now understand why Dad said lawyers are so crooked that you can screw them into the ground when they die.

How long till we hear from NC media that it's "not fair" that he can't get his record expunged?

Even though he has his license back, I wouldn't trust him to handle my affairs, would you???? Run Forrest, Run!!!!!

The corrupt reinstating the corrupt. I agree Justiceforall who said. “We need to gut the whole system and start over.”

and we wonder why the nation as we know it is going to the sewer

Why give law license back to someone who is a felon?

While I'm a Democrat I blame former Governor Mike Easley among others part of the reasons for the loss of the Governorship to Pat McCrory. He is a disappointment to me as a Democrat and should be to the Party. Even though it appeared he used his power in office for personal gains and/or to circumvent campaign laws he still gets his law license back. I wouldn't want Mike Easley to represent me in any type of litigation or other legal issues.

The corrupt overseeing the corrupt! And we wonder what has happened to the country. No moral core, no personal responsibility, no country. Thank the liberals when you get a chance!

"At least he did a lot for North Carolina unlike Perdue"

WTH? If you call blowing through a budget surplus faster than drinking water on a hot day ... if you call seeing our tax burden rise from 36th in the nation to 23rd in the nation (per capita) ... if you call getting his wife a cush job at NCState and then before Bev leaves, wifey gets an INCREASE in her pension payment for said 'job' she didn't perform... if you think the taxpayers should have picked up the tab for his and his wife to travel internationally and spend like rock stars while doing so ....

I could go on. If you believe he was "good" for this state, then I guess you voted for him twice.

What a shame.

What can you say? We need to gut the whole system and start over.

I do believe in Karma...he will get his..seems to come back and haunt folks like this..

Crook.....like the rest of them

Where do I start?

The good ole boy network at work.

Do I think Easley should be in jail? Absolutely. Unfortunately, he is smart and capable of using the code of laws to his advantage. Is he doing anything any different from anyone who is wealthier than most of us? Nope. It baffles me to see the stupidity of the party affiliation of those not involved claiming to be the holier than thou group. Power gets corrupt when it is not controlled and contained. Republican Stephen LaRoque is a fine example of that, he ranks right up there with Sleasley.

The good ole boy backroom deals continue to this day. This pathetic politician, a man NC voters elected more than once, gets away with it in the end.

Just like Bev has done.

Pat yourselves on the back. You have no business being allowed to elect anyone.

Come on guys, have little sympathy, without his license to practice law, we'd have to take care of him for the rest of his life. He will either go back to prison for stealing or get on welfare, he has no other money earning skills.

SHOULD NOT HAVE ISSUED THE LICENSE UNTIL THE PENALTIES AND ANY INTEREST WERE PAID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He should be in jail! Period!

At least he did a lot for North Carolina unlike Perdue... If lawyers always had to be honest most folks who break the law would in up in jail...

Is it no wonder that the words alligator and litigator and lawyer and liar sound so alike...

gotta love liberalism arfamr1007

Yep you're never wrong nor responsible for your actions.

Only you and other attorneys can do something about this. I challenge you, but I bet you do nothing.

bubbba

HEY BUBBA YER BUDDYS set him free-- not me. i have fought the board many times i know how crooked lawyers are. and i know how corrupt the state bar is.

PLEASE DONT SAY CREDUBILITY AND THE STATE BAR IN THE SAME SENTENCE.

a fine representative of the nc state democrat party and a fine example of the average democrat in nc. by all means --carry on!

Is there ANYONE who is truly surprised that he got it back? It's the good 'ole boy network.... you scratch mine, I'll scratch yours.....

gotta love liberalism
