DURHAM, N.C. — Phone and e-mail service was restored to Durham County administrative offices Thursday afternoon, hours after the offices were knocked offline, officials said.

The outage, which affected the offices of the county manager, the county attorney, the Board of Commissioners and the county's public information office, was caused by a network switch hardware failure on the second floor of the county government building, officials said.

No other floor or users were affected by the outage.

A temporary unit with limited capacity was installed by the county IT department before noon Thursday until the replacement data switch was received from Verizon in the afternoon.
