— Police are investigating a homicide after they found a woman dead inside a south Durham apartment Tuesday morning.

Officers were called to Greens of Pine Glen, on Greens Hollow Lane, shortly after 10 a.m. to check on the welfare of a resident when they found Ella Davis, 58, dead.

"The cause of death has not been determined, but the death appears to be suspicious and is being investigated at the time as a homicide," Durham Police Department spokeswoman Kammie Michael said in an email Tuesday afternoon.

Michael provided no other information about the case, but anyone with information is asked to call the police department at 919-560-4440, extension 29322, or Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200.

Neighbors said Davis was well-liked in the neighborhood and often led bible studies in her apartment building.

One resident said she can't help but feel on edge after the crime.

"It's a little scary, definitely something to be concerned about," said Ariel Viana. "You have to remember to keep your doors locked and be safe at night, because you don't know who could be roaming around."

I think this is the 15th homicide in Durham this year. The previous 14 were all black male victims. She's the first female.

I hope they get the murderer very quickly.
