— Authorities canceled a Silver Alert late Sunday for a Durham County woman.

The alert was issued on Saturday for 53-year-old Betty Lou Durham. Police said she was found safe but did not provide other details.

Developed in 2007, Silver Alert is a system to quickly notify the public about missing endangered adults who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease.

It also allows caregivers and nursing homes to report a person missing. In the past, only a family member could report an adult missing.

Identify people with challenges insures that the thiefs in the
neighborhood have easy targets. I understand the importance of this program, just seems WRAL shares to much after the fact with the public when you see the quanity of people arrest for obtaining property by false pretense. These individuals are perfect targets......Leave some identifications unshown PLEASE!

Why necessary to post a picture on the "found safe" article? If I had a family member with a medical or mental issue that had resulted in her being the subject of a silver alert, I wouldn't particularly want the picture to continue to be published in connection to the situation once the need for people to recognize her was past.
