DURHAM, N.C. — The Durham County Board of Commissioners on Monday voted Monday to add a half-cent sales tax to purchases, starting in April. Voters approved the tax, to be used for public transit projects, last year.

Durham officials held back on collecting the tax pending action from Orange and Wake counties on similar transit taxes. Orange County voters approved a half-cent sales tax for transit three weeks ago, but Wake County officials haven't put a transit tax on the ballot yet.

Triangle Transit will manage how the tax money is spent on area bus and rail services, Durham officials said.
