Durham Theater Closing for Repairs

Posted June 1, 2007

— A landmark theater in Durham is closing for repairs.

The Carolina Theater has a leaky roof and needs a new heating and cooling system.

The theater, built in 1926, stopped showing films Thursday, but will host several live performances in the coming week.

The theater is due to reopen in August.

I would rather see a movie in an independent theater (such as the Carolina, Chapel Hill's Chelsea, or Cary's Galaxy) than anywhere else.

I hope the money lost by remaining closed for so long (even though it was scheduled beforehand)is gained back by a renewed interest in and knowledge of a local treasure.

The lack of context in this article is somewhat deceptive. This is not a last-minute discovery and emergency repair on short notice, but rather a major maintenance window that has been planned for several years, and which was funded in the 2005 City bond.

The Carolina will be back in time for August -- hurray!
