— A 16-year-old Riverside High School student was critically injured in a parking lot outside the school Wednesday evening, Durham police said.

According to a preliminary investigation, several students were leaving school around 7 p.m. when the teen fell off the trunk of a car and hit his head.

He was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment. His medical condition was unclear, as police did not release his name Wednesday night.

Investigators said another student was in his car when the victim got on the car’s trunk. They did not say whether the car was moving at the time he fell.

Charges haven’t been filed and the case is still under investigation, a police spokeswoman said.

okay well i personally know this kid and he a great kid not the one to play around things (cars) that shouldnt be joked with. He was not sitting in a tailgate of a trunk he was sitting on the trunk of a car to relax before he left. there was no horse play involved in this best wishes Joey stay strong.

As a 12 year old who'd just been in a minor accident and waiting in a very old ER (no privacy curtains) for some stitches. I witnessed a very young child being wheeled by who'd just been "bumped" out of a truck bed. Then I watched as his father, the driver of the truck being told his son had died. This experience caused me to become a crusader to never allow anyone I cared for to ride in the back of a truck.
This is a tragedy that can be prevented.

This is heartbreaking. This shouldn't happen. Jesting around with a car is not cool, nor funny! Hearts and prayers go out to all involved.

"We're just having fun, jokeing around with a 2K lb auto." -Sherlock

There is nothing to joke about when dealing with a 2,000 lb car. Cars can only be fun when driven in an appropriate and safe manner. You shouldn't take such serious things with such a casual attitude.

Just buried a friend that 'was just playing games' on the hood of a truck..this child lived 16 months in a coma..Trucks, cars and guns are not toys..I wish these parents did not have to go thru this..devastating..praying he will be ok

Another good reason that teenager should not be allowed to drive. We're just having fun, jokeing around with a 2K lb auto. I hope the kid is ok.
