MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The body of a Durham teen was recovered Monday from the ocean off Myrtle Beach, about 3 miles north of where he was last seen over the weekend, authorities said.

Dorrion Smith, 15, went under the water Saturday near the 14th Avenue pier in downtown Myrtle Beach, authorities said. His brother said he was about 50 yards from shore, and it appeared he was being pulled out to sea in choppy surf, according to a police incident report.

The brother and others on the beach went into the ocean to try to find the teen but couldn't, and a search by Myrtle Beach police using a JetSki and by the Coast Guard using a helicopter was also unsuccessful, the police report states.

Smith was in Myrtle Beach with the Triangle Thunder Boyz basketball team for an AAU tournament. The team has set up a GoFundMe page to help the family with funeral expenses.
