Durham teen charged in grandmother's death, 4-year-old brother's stabbing

Officers responding to a cardiac arrest call at 3421 Glasson St. shortly before 5 a.m. found Carolyn Hemingway, 62, dead and the young boy, who was taken to Duke University Hospital, seriously injured, authorities said.

Treyvon Evans was later arrested on murder and attempted murder charges.

In a 911 call released late Wednesday morning, a person referred to as "Trey" tells a dispatcher twice he arrived home about 10 minutes earlier and found Hemingway unresponsive.

Investigators haven't commented on a motive, saying only that the stabbings followed an argument.

Neighbors said it wasn't unusual for Evans and Hemingway – who lived at the apartment with her grandchildren – to argue.

"Sometimes, Trey would get mad at his grandma, and they would get to arguing," next-door neighbor Ellen Motley said. "Trey would leave and come over to my house."

Despite the arguing, Motley said, Hemingway was a loving grandmother who cared for at least three of her grandchildren – Evans, the 4-year-old and a little girl – while their mother was ill.

"She was good to that boy. She did everything she could for that boy," Motley said. "If he was going through problems, he should have come and talked to somebody."
