DURHAM, N.C. — Police on Monday were investigating a homicide that occurred early Saturday in the 500 block of Liberty Street.

Officers responded to a shooting call in the parking lot at 574 Liberty St. shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday. When they arrived, they found Latarvio Lee Metts, 42, of Taylor Street, on the ground with a gunshot wound, police said.

Metts was taken to Duke University Hospital, where he died.

About 2½ hours later, officers returned to the block to respond to an assault call. A 54-year-old woman told officers that she was sleeping in her apartment when her boyfriend cut her throat and fled in a car belonging to one of her relatives.

The woman was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries, and she was in stable condition Monday.

Wake County deputies on Sunday arrested Walter McIver in Fuquay-Varina in the case. McIver, 45, of Holloway Street, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, possession of a stolen vehicle and interfering with emergency communications.

McIver was being held without bond Monday in the Durham County Jail.

Anyone with information about Metts' shooting is asked to call the Durham Police Department at 919-560-4440 or Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200.
