Durham store owner shoots man during attempted robbery
A man who attempted to break into a Durham convenience store was arrested early Friday after being shot by the store owner, Durham police said.
Posted — UpdatedThe incident happened around 2:30 a.m. when Albert Lenhardt, 30, broke into the M&M Mini Mart, at 801 North Mangum St. According to authorities, Lenhardt left the store after being shot.
He was arrested a short time later on Gurley Street and taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The store owner, Ayed Quzah, said he had been sleeping at his store since Wednesday after someone cut a hole in the roof, broke in and took cigarettes, toiletries and money.
Quzah, who was not expected to be charged in the incident, said he's owned and operated the store for 16 years.
Lenhardt was charged with breaking and entering in connection with Friday's incident. He was also arrested on warrants charging him with felony larceny, possession of marijuana with the intent to manufacture, sell or deliver, and communicating threats. He was in Durham County Jail Friday morning under a $7,500 bond.
