Durham spraygrounds open today; public pools gear up for summer season
Posted May 9, 2014
With more hot weather in the forecast today, Durham parks timed the opening of its spraygrounds just about right this season.
Three of the city's four spraygrounds open today. They'll stay open until Sept. 26. You can find them at Forest Hills, 1639 University Drive; Edison Johnson, 500 W. Murray Ave.; and East End Park and E.D. Mickle Community Center, 1200 N. Alston Ave. The sprayground at Hillside, 1221 Sawyer St., will open June 13. Spraygrounds are open dawn to dusk.
Durham's outdoor pools at Forest Hills and Hillside parks will be open from June 13 to Aug. 15 this year. The city has extended hours at those two outdoor pools to make up for the loss of Long Meadow Pool, which won't open this season because of mechanical problems.
Elsewhere across the region, most of the public outdoor pools won't open for another couple of weeks, including in Raleigh where Lake Johnson and Ridge Road pools start the outdoor season on May 19. The city also will open the seasonal wading pool and sprayground at Millbrook Exchange Park and the wading pool and diving boards at Optimist Park pool on May 19. All of the city's other outdoor pools will be open by June 7.
Raleigh parks officials also have extended hours at its pools because of the scheduled closing of Pullen Park Aquatic Center, which which will be undergoing major work from May 19 to Oct. 27.
