The Museum of Life and Science in Durham on Tuesday unveiled an activity that allows visitors to explore the museum in a new way.
The Curiosity Trail will run through Sept. 30 across the museum's 84-acre campus. Visitors can search for clues and solve puzzles as they discover a place they may have visited dozens of times in an entirely new light.
To participate, according to a press release, visit the museum during normal business hours and pick up a participant card in the lobby. You'll follow clues from one exhibit to the next and collect hole punches on your card along the way.
Turn in completed cards to the Elements Museum Store and be entered to win one of three grand prizes. The grand prize will be a "year full of wonder" in which you will receive quarterly packages of a hands-on science kit from the museum's store plus a private museum program for the winning family.
"We're excited for our first Curiosity Trail event," said Elizabeth Fleming, senior director for learning environments & communications, in a press release. "It's going to be a new way for all of our visitors - even members who are here every week - to follow their curiosity and engage with areas of the museum they might not have noticed before."
There will be two different trails. The first will run from Tuesday, Sept. 6 to Sept. 18. The second will run from Sept. 20 to Sept. 30. Visitors who explore both trails will be entered twice for the grand prize.
The museum shared some tips if you go:
- Both trails are designed to encourage whole family participation with activities, puzzles and clues for a variety of age groups. (Staff Tip: Take your time! You can complete the trail over multiple visits and include different members of your family along the way!)
- Wear comfy shoes. These trails will have you up and moving all over the museum campus through some of your favorite indoor and outdoor exhibits.
- Be prepared to look up, down and all around as you search for the answers to these curious clues. (Staff tip: Take a second look! As your exploring the trails, keep an eye out for clues that contain special tips for ways you and your family can have even more curious fun during your visit!)
- Bring a camera or a smart phone to take pictures of the clues to remind you along the way and also to share on social media. If you post pictures to social media, tag photos with #MLSCuriosityTrail for a chance to be featured on the museum's website and to win one of our weekly participation prizes.
The Curiosity Trail is free with admission to the museum, which is $16 for adults and $11 for kids ages 3 to 12.
