Durham schools pays $200K owed to custodians by contractor
The Durham County Board of Education voted Monday to pay $200,000 in back pay to scores of school custodians even though they work for a contractor and not Durham Public Schools.

The school district pays Service Solutions to clean local schools, and some of the work is subcontracted to Integrity Facilities Management, which filed for bankruptcy last fall and didn't pay more than 140 custodians for work between Oct. 16 and Nov. 5.
Most of the Integrity workers have since been hired by a new company, but they say their benefits and hours have been reduced.
The school board authorized a payment to Service Solutions to cover what was owed to the custodians when they worked for Integrity and asked the district's attorneys to seek reimbursement through the bankruptcy court as Integrity's creditors are paid off.
