— The Board of Education for Durham Public Schools has called a special meeting next Tuesday to discuss the search for a new superintendent.

Eric Becoats, who held the position since April 2010, resigned Dec. 31 after scrutiny in recent months over questionable purchases involving school system finances.

Becoats, who was under contract until June 30, 2016, received a one-time severance payment of $298,072.54.

Monday's meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m. in the board conference room of the Fuller Administration Building, at 511 Cleveland St. in Durham.

"The Chapel Hill/Carrboro school system needs to increase its diversity by combining with and mentoring the Durham school system. Why does a simple county line result in such a bright line deference in childrens education."

Durham did just this when they merged the city and county schools. The thing is is that no one addressed the city's schools problems and the only thing accomplished is that schools which were in county are awful no too.

The Durham situation will never get better until the BOE opens the opportunity to fill the position to all the applicants that apply or would apply if the process is color blind as it is suppose to be.

I hope the registered voters in Durham put some heat on the school board over the next few weeks to make a sensible hire.

Those who put Becoats into power, kept giving him bonuses, and failed to hold him responsible for his numerous mistakes should be held accountable for their very poor judgement.

Setnitst8 - "Maybe they should do a background check and actually look into previous work history to avoid another Becoats incident."

Actually, they knew that he was a thief when they hired him.
