Durham's Main Library shifts programs to multiple locations

Durham County Library's Main Library will be undergoing a major renovation over the next couple of years, but that doesn't mean its programs and services have stopped.

Durham County Library's Main Library will be undergoing a major renovation over the next couple of years, but that doesn't mean its programs and services have stopped.

The library system has launched the Downtown Library Without Walls, moving activities to locations across the area. Here's where you can find them, according to a press release:

The Digital Access Center opens at 10 a.m., March 3, inside the Criminal Justice Resource Center at 326 E. Main Street in downtown Durham. There will be a computer lab with 12 public computers. Weekly hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sundays, with computers available all three days until 5:30 p.m. On select Sundays beginning in March, the bookmobile will also be at the Criminal Justice Resource Center.
Programming and open space for children and teens has started at the Durham Housing Authority on Liberty Street. It's 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tuesdays are enrichment programming days. Thursdays are more academically focused.
Tutoring and homework help is at The Scrap Exchange, 2050 Chapel Hill Rd, Durham, has started. This popular program pairs teen and college student volunteers with kids in grades kindergarten through sixth for homework help. Applications are required for both kids and teens interested in participating or volunteering. Students and tutors meet for an hour each week to work on homework and practice reading and math skills. Books Among Friends is the Friends of the Durham Library’s new headquarters inside Northgate Mall beside Sears. They will accept book donations from 9 a.m. to noon, Tuesdays, starting March 7. Questions about donations can be directed to fodldonations@gmail.com. The Grand Opening Book Sale will be 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., April 28, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., April 29.
Also located at Northgate Mall is the MakerLab, which opens the first weekend in March. The MakerLab focuses on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) programs. The MakerLab hosts school field trips as well as programs for teens and adults during the week and programs for all ages during weekend hours. Teens are invited to attend Teen MakerDay: Chainmaille Edition at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, March 4. Erin Hathaway will teach participants how to create chainmaille keychains.
