Durham's Main Library lines up locations to host programs during construction

During construction, library patrons can check out books in the system's other locations. The library also is lining up other locations to host a few of the Main Library's programs and serve downtown Durham.

Sunday is the final day Durham County Library's Main Library will be open to the public until crews wrap up a major renovation that could take at least two years.

The project at 300 N. Roxboro St. will include an expansion and overhaul of the decades-old building and provide more space, updated areas and better technology.

Here are some of the plans, according to a press release:

Starting the first full week of February, programming and open space for children and teens will be available at Durham Housing Authority, Liberty Street from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tuesdays will be programming days. Thursdays will be more academically focused.
Starting the first weekend in March 2017, the bookmobile will be at the Criminal Justice Resource Center on select Sundays.
And a creative, hands-on learning space for people of all ages at Northgate Mall. Stay tuned for more information.

The Friends of the Durham Library will host a final book sale at Main Library on Feb. 11 and Feb. 12, according to a press release. After Feb. 14, the group's book sale sorting and operations will move to Northgate Mall in a space next to Sears. Plans are being developed to open that space regularly for book sales, a press release says.
