The free event is designed for rising Durham Public Schools' kindergarten students and their families.

<a href="https://www.dpsnc.net/site/Default.aspx?PageID=2&PageType=17&DomainID=4&ModuleInstanceID=1&EventDateID=802" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Durham Public Schools' Countdown to Kindergarten</strong></a> is scheduled for next week at the Museum of Life and Science.

The event is 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Aug. 3, at the Durham museum at 433 W. Murray Ave.

They can come out to tour the museum's exhibits; meet characters from Letterland, a program used to teach reading; sign up for a library card; and learn more about required immunizations, school lunches, the kindergarten curriculum and before and after school programs. Kids also can take a quick school bus ride.

In Wake County, Marbles Kids Museum will host its <a href="https://www.marbleskidsmuseum.org/kickofftokindergarten" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Kickoff to Kindergarten</strong></a> from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Aug. 19.
