Durham road to close for bridge repair

— Pickett Road in Durham just off U.S. Highway 15-501 southwest of Durham will be closed for four months while the North Carolina Department of Transportation works to repair the bridge over Mud Creek.

The closure, scheduled to begin Wednesday at 7 a.m., will affect a section of Pickett Road between Randolph and Garrett roads (labeled in blue on map below).

Work is expected to be completed by Nov. 21, 2008.

Residents of the effected area will be allowed to travel Pickett Road. All others will be directed on a detour (in orange) using Randolph Road, Erwin Road, Cornwallis Road and Western Bypass Road.

    It's about time. That bridge is in such bad condition. Rarely have I seen a bridge that has POTHOLES in the concrete portion of the actual bridge. I think one could actually see the underlying wire mesh in one of the holes. I always thought to myself, "well, at least if this thing collapses, it's not like the creek is that deep or the fall too far."
