Durham repairs 'major' water main break

Posted October 11, 2011

— A water main broke in Durham Tuesday afternoon, flooding neighborhoods and stifling service in the northern part of the city and some adjacent parts of Durham County, officials said.

The Durham Water Management Department expected to have service restored by late afternoon. Crews had isolated the break in the 24-inch main and were working to repair it.

Customers who do not have their water service restored by 5 p.m. should contact the Water Management Department’s after-hours emergency line at 919-560-4344.

The pipe that broke was a 90-year old, 24" iron pipe, per other news outlets, originally installed to carry raw water from Lake Michie to Durham. It now carries treated drinking water.

A break in a 24" pipe could put one heck of a drain on the system. It is amazing how old some of the infrastructure that we rely on every day is.

Poor informational reporting........don't you think it would have been nice to post the street name for those who live and work in the area? My sister lives out that way.....causing me concern.

On ABC - A spokesperson says the break is in a 24-inch main near Teer Quarry - where the pipe crosses the Eno River.
