— A store clerk in Durham shot a customer in the leg Monday evening, police said.

The clerk and the customer got into an argument around 6:40 p.m. at University Market, at 1108 W. Chapel Hill St., police said.

At some point, the clerk pulled out a handgun from behind the counter and shot the victim once in the leg, police said.

The victim was taken to Duke University Hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said they have made an arrest in the case, but didn't release more details.

"Yeah, good luck dodging bullets. I'll take my chances shooting back.

And how many innocent bystanders will be collateral damage?

"It is a lot easier to dodge a hail of wildly fired rounds from one direction than a deadly crossfire of rounds fired from two directions.

"I don't trust the people running around with permits one bit more than I trust those without permits."

Then you don't trust anyone apparently. Better just stay home.

"The state will just keep on handing out gun permits like party favors and watch people die." That's kind of funny, since North Carolina doesn't issue "gun permits". Maybe you're talking about concealed handgun permits (CHP) ... but the number of CHP holders that commit crimes is minuscule. I'd feel perfectly safe standing in a room full of CHP permittees, and I'm willing to guess any shop owner who has been burgled and/or assaulted would be similarly happy to have lawfully armed customers on the premises. Allow law-abiding citizens to be armed and watch incidents of violent crime drop; that corollary has been demonstrated time and time again.

Yup, many bad persons are aware of those criminal empowerment zones where they can work unimpeded. Your attitude is strange from someone who once claimed to have had a NYC permit.

It has nothing at all to do with guns or the idea of carrying them. It's all about the Yahoos around here that are carrying them. I read the posts here and know the ilk of the posters. I wouldn't trust a lot of them with water pistols much less firearms.

Durham needs to furnish bullets to store keepers when they renew their business license. I'm all for it!

You must not know about the 1920's.
