DURHAM, N.C. — Durham police are trying to find the people who fired shots into a car on the Durham Freeway between the Briggs Avenue and Ellis Road exits Monday night.

A 32-year-old man, whom police did not identify, told officers that he was leaving a friend’s home on Nixon Street at about 10 p.m. when he noticed two vehicles – a dark blue Dodge Charger and a white or gray Acura – in the middle of the street.

He said the two vehicles, which were both occupied by several people, followed him as he drove from Nixon Street and onto the southbound lanes of the Durham Freeway.

People inside the vehicles fired shots at his vehicle, he said, causing him to cross the freeway median and crash in the northbound lanes. The man said he ran from the area, and officers found him about 2 miles away.

Police said they do not believe Monday night's shooting is related to a shooting Saturday afternoon near Jackie Robinson Drive and Fayetteville Street. Neither shooting appears to be random, according to preliminary investigations.

Anyone with information on Monday night's shooting is asked to call Investigator Emanuel at 919-560-4415, ext. 29306, or Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200.

CrimeStoppers pays cash rewards for information leading to arrests in felony cases and callers never have to identify themselves.
