DURHAM, N.C. — Police were searching Friday for a man charged with robbing a Durham bank on Thursday.

Willie Mortez Daniel, 41, of Lake Road in Creedmoor, was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon.

A man handed note demanding money to a teller at the SunTrust branch at 4235 University Drive at about 12:30 p.m., police said. The man held his hand under his shirt as if he had a gun, but no weapon was seen.

The robber fled with an undisclosed amount of money in a dark blue Jeep Grand Cherokee, police said. A second man and a woman also were in the vehicle.

An investigator spotted the Jeep at an apartment complex at 2507 S. Roxboro St. a short time later, and officers surrounded an apartment where the robber was believed to be hiding. After several minutes, the occupants came out of the apartment, but the robber was not inside, police said.

Anyone with information on Daniel’s whereabouts is asked to call the Durham Police Department at 919-560-4583, extension 29360, or Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200.
