— Durham police on Monday released the names of the police officer and the man the officer shot and killed Saturday.

Officer G.M. Munter was dispatched to an overdose/suicide threats call at 4:37 p.m. Saturday in the 600 block of East Geer Street. Officers confronted Joseph Cameron Pence, 44, who lived at the house.

Munter then shot and killed Pence, police said. Munter joined the Durham Police Department in August 2004 and is assigned to the Operations Bureau.

The incident is being investigated by the police department's Professional Standards Unit and the State Bureau of Investigation, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Durham Police Department at 919-560-4440 or Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200.

No additional information was provided.

Once again Hans showing hatred to the police and just how ignorant he is. Not surprised there!! We have NO idea what happened, yet you are already making smart comments. Don't worry, I'm sure some other haters will join you as well. It's shame!!

Prayers with the Officer who has to live with the fact that he has played a part in ending someone's life. May God give his mind peace!! Prayers also going out to the family and friends of the individual who decided to end his life.

I am glad the Officer was not physically hurt. Sometimes when people are so desperate that they are to the point of committing suicide, they will want to take someone with them. Once again thankfully the Officer was not hurt and gets to go home. Police have such a tough job for little pay that most of us probably cannot relate to in our 9-5 boring jobs...
